Trivani has been funding the construction and installation of ferro-cement water cisterns in the village of Tamaula, Mexico. In a very dry and arid village, these cisterns enable households to store clean, safe drinking water year round. Tamaula has no public well with potable water, so villagers have had to rely upon a water truck to deliver water to the community. The villagers place their empty water barrels in the village square, and once a week, the water truck makes the steep journey to the village to fill the barrels. Families then take the barrels and haul them home by foot, donkey, or truck to use the water for cleaning, cooking, and drinking. Each family has a ration of one to two barrels of water per week—barely enough to satisfy their drinking needs.
Cement water cisterns can store surplus water safely without risk of evaporation or contamination and can collect and store rain water when accompanied by a water catchment system. It is our goal to provide a water cistern to each of the 50 family households in the community to significantly improve their health, sanitation and hygiene, and quality of life. Visit the Trivani Foundation website for more ways to contribute to the change we wish to see in the world.
